SOLUTION: A few simple everyday skin care habits can ensure that your skin is taken care of through the summer. Here are few handy pointers that can keep your skin glowing through the summer. Dr. Deepali Bhardwaj, a leading dermatologist and the founder of Skin and Hair Clinics has provided us with some expert advice on taking care of skin in the summer.

What happens to our Skin in the Summer time?

According to Dr. Deepali, with Summer arriving and warmer temperatures it is time to change your skincare routine. The summer Sun can be pretty harsh on your skin if you don’t take care it. So, just like you change your wardrobe seasonally, your skincare also needs a seasonal change.

Too much and over exposure to sun rays is harmful to your skin and can cause premature ageing of the skin. The skin pigment called melanin in our skin will be produced more if too much exposure to sun this is why we get tanned and the skin colour changes. So sunscreens are highly recommended regardless of your skin-type.

Here’s a list of holistic summer skincare for all skin type.

1. Face care

Your face is the first thing the world looks at when they see you, it is your identity to the world, you need to take care of it every day. But in the summer time a special skin care regimen is needed one that hydrates and keeps it clean. Keep your face clean of dust and sweat throughout the summer as best as you can. Break-outs and pimples in these months are common. If you are prone to break-outs, make sure you splash your face with water at least 3-4 times a day. Face wash is not needed every time, clean water is just fine.

Dermatologist Dr Deepali also suggests exfoliation as a method to keep your face clean, “Using a scrub once or twice a week in summers for all skin types is important but, which scrub depends on your skin type.”

Our 2 recommended exfoliates are:

  2. Perfect Glow Scrub http://www.guinot.com/gommages/gommage-eclat-parfait/

Summer Skin Care Tips: Splash your face with water 3-4 times a day.

2. Use products appropriate for the weather
The thick creams that were good in the winter time need to be packed away or only used for very dry areas of your body like the feet. In the summer time use products that are lighter in texture to let your skin breathe naturally. Go for serums and lighter moisturizers.

“Water-based moisturizers work best for normal skin types. For oily skin, gel-based moisturizers are preferred. For extra oily and acne prone skin, stick to facial sprays with minerals good for your skin’, says Dr. Deepali. “Natural moisturizers like glycerin and rose water added to the bathing water helps a lot and applying plain curd for 10-15 minutes on all dry areas of the body before bathing works wonders too,” she adds.

3. Back to the basics

If you think your skin cannot get dry during summers you are mistaking. Just moving in and out of air-conditioned areas causes your skin to dry out not just your face but your entire body. Make sure you follow the good old basic rule of cleaningtoning and moisturizing every day. Sweating causes our skin pores to open up, using a toner (after washing your skin) helps to close the pores. It is important to stick to the basics during summers since the UV rays of the sun could result in premature ageing and wrinkles.

4. Sunscreen is very Important

Make sure you wear sunscreen! UV rays can be harmful to your skin any time of the year, but more so in the summer since the exposure is higher. A minimum SPF of 30 is recommended and you should apply every 20-30 minutes. If you are going to swim, then keep re-applying as it washes out. Sunscreen application can go a long way in minimizing sun related spots and could even help delay the onset of fine lines and wrinkles.

Recommendation: La Spa Ultra Sun Stick (SPF 30 & SPF 50)

5. Natural remedies

Don’t underestimate the wisdom of your grandma! There are ingredients in your kitchen that can help your skin look fresh and bright in the summer. Lemon and tomato are 2 examples. For example you could juice tomatoes (don’t add water) and freeze the juice using your regular ice-trays. Use this as a gentle scrub every other day and let the juice dry on your skin and then wash off. The lycopene in tomato helps protect your skin cells from damage and offers protection against the sun!

6. What about your eyes and lips

During the summer months the sun is harshest between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m avoid stepping out around these times, or protect your eyes with sunglasses and your lips with a balm. The skin around the eyes is very delicate and needs extra attention, if your eyes feel dry and burn due to too much heat, then wash them with clean and cold water. You could also use a couple of cold cotton pads dipped in potato juice to sooth your eye irritation. . If the problem persists, do consult a doctor.

Summer Skin Care Tips: wash your eyes with cold water if heat is irritating your eyes.

7. Hygiene Maintenance

To combat summer lethargy have a bath once if not twice a day, that would also help keep your skin fresh. Remember that chlorine water speeds up the process of tanning that’s why we tan more in the pool than ordinarily. Take a shower after your swim to get the chlorine off your body. If you working out, don’t let your sweat dry and stay on your skin for too long as it could clog your pores and cause break-outs or skin irritation.

You could use sea salt and give your feet a bath for better blood circulation. Ask your esthetician for sea salt in your pedicure soak!

8. Eat foods that cool your body temprature

We are what we eat! What we eat has an effect on how we feel and look. Eating heavy food will make you lethargic in hot summer weather, it could also make your skin oily and prone to breakouts. Seasonal fruits and vegetables are highly recommended to help with better digestion and overall health. Not just in summer time but always for good measure stay away from sugary drinks they are full of calories. Make sure you hydrate and drink enough water. Juicing is highly recommended

Summer Skin Care Tips: to have radiant skin stick with seasonal fruits and vegetables.

9. Wear breathable fabrics

Try avoiding tight clothes, they can cause irritation and make sweaty parts of your body itch more. Wear bright colours and light fabrics such as cotton. Don’t leave sweaty clothes on for too long as they can lead to rashes and sometimes even serious skin infections.

10. Don’t fear the sun

And Finally, do not be afraid of the sun! The Vitamin D our body produces from the sunshine helps enhance our mood and our over all health. We need the sun to survive. Serotonin or the “Happy Hormone” is produced in the Sunlight, that’s why in short winter days we feel low energy. Slow down the aging process of the skin, balance taking care of your skin and being outdoors. As long as you protect your skin with a good skin care regimen you are safe to have fun in the sun!

Have a happy summer!
